Wade Waddell (USA): Opti Champion of Champions

oct10_optifinalBy Laurie Fullerton

Hamilton, Bermuda— 10 October 2011: The RenRe Junior Gold Cup wrapped up Sunday afternoon as a true champion of champions event. The world’s best young sailors met each other for some premiere Opti sailing with 11 national champions facing off from 17 countries, including 22 Bermudian sailors. Taking home the Junior Gold Cup this year is American Wade Waddell, 14, of Miami, Florida.

Waddell led the regatta over all four days. After finishing 12 races going in to today, his final race on Hamilton harbor was not his best but he got the job done. Waddell admitted that he protected his lead by banking on second place finisher Astrid Still of Finland, who was also was the top girl sailor of the overall event.

“In some ways I should have sailed my own race but I thought I should also protect my lead and ‘sit’ on Astrid,” Waddell said. “I was focusing a lot on that today. “

Astrid Still, 15, who is a powerful sailor with real great instinct was disappointed she “couldn’t sail my own race” but she said she probably would have done the same thing if she were leading.

Wadell leads by 9 going into final race

By Laurie Fullerton

Hamilton, Bermuda October 8, 2011: All of the 34 international and national sailors competing at the RenRe Junior Gold Cup felt a bit lost, than found, on the race course today as they tried to negotiate the shifty winds of Bermuda. Picking the correct side of the course proved to be a real challenge. Yet, after five races on the day— twelve in all— and after some erratic finishes, American Wade Waddell retains first place with 30 points.

“I still find this to be tough with shifty, strong breezes and it is cold weather sailing for me,” said Waddell who comes from Miami, Florida. “But, I think I just tried to stay in the top of fleet as best I could.”

Waddell is an all weather sailor but like many of the others, trying to pick the shifts was the day’s toughest challenge. “I had two rough races and two good ones but it was really about paying attention.” Waddell actually was up and down today with a 13, 21,4, 1, 3 but again with his consistent sailing over the last three days he remains the one to beat.
